Use the correct volume language
Write 5 US gallon / approximately 18.9L when referring to that format. Write 20L large-format bottle for a 20-liter container. This prevents commercial and engineering ambiguity.
- 5 US gallon β 18.9L
- 20L is a separate nominal volume
- Regional words include bottle, jug, container, barrel or jar
- Technical documents should use liters and drawings
Dimensions matter more than the label
Overall height, diameter, shoulder, handle, base and neck finish determine transfer and wash-nozzle compatibility. Two bottles with similar volume can need different holders, guides or timings.
- Height and maximum diameter
- Neck finish
- Handle and shoulder
- Base form
- Tolerances and deformation
Cap and process can differ
Cap geometry, tamper feature, handle and treatment method affect sorting and capping. Returnable condition also affects brushing, washing and inspection regardless of nominal volume.
- Cap drawing and samples
- Neck engagement
- Returned-bottle condition
- Wash coverage
- Changeover method
Test both formats
If the order includes 18.9L and 20L, require both approved bottle and cap sets in design review and FAT. Record the configuration, change parts and accepted output for each.
- Signed samples
- Format-specific settings
- Changeover work
- Output basis
- Finished-bottle checks
